Have you ever looked at layouts in a magazine and wonder how do they do that. You know that all it is is paper and some creativity. You have both but are stuck. Just can't make it look like those that you've seen. Well, the trick in how you can achieve that same look is layering. You don't need alot of fancey emblishments (sometimes they help). 1st you pick out your photos. Try to pick out 1 to 2 if you pick to many you will get overwhelmed (for one page layout). Then figure out the theme. Example your child has bright blue eyes and a cute little smile. This could be "blue eyes", if your child is in all pink then this could be "pretty in pink". Keep it simple and you will find you will get more pages done and they will look great. After picking your photos, look at what colors are in the photos. Example you and your husband standing in front of your home which might be yellow. Pick yellow as your color (unless you are croping the photo and can't see the house), another example your dog playing in the back yard. Pick green because of the grass. Once you pick your basic color then you need to pick at least 2 more colors in the same color family or on the oppisite side of the color wheel. If you are a beginner just use 3 different shades of one color. Once you've done this you use one page as the background page, then use the other two as your mattes, boarders, titles, ect. Lets use the example "Blue Eyes". Blue paper for the background, baby blue paper for the outer matte, and a strip babyblue for the inner matte. Glue the pictures down to the matte (not the matte to the paper yet) then pick the same gebination to cut out the words "Blue as the sky my baby's blue eyes" You can use all of these words with the matted effect or just some in different size fonts (have fun). Make a few more mattes that are a bit smaller to fill in the empty spaces (these can be used for journaling what you love about him or what he does that makes you laugh. What ever is special to you so when you look back on that page you will remember). Tilt them around the page, words and mattes. make them overlap each other (a little bit or alot). Then add your emblishments if you desire. Like ribbon (tie it around a photo), brads (at the corners of boarders to hold them in place), photo corners, or even make your own cut outs. Once your page looks like you want it write on a peice of paper the first layer, then the second layer, and so on. Then take everything off your page. Now you can glue without forgetting how your page went. Hint: do several of these and put them in a large ziplock bag and lable your title on the outside. Then when you have some more free time or want to feel like you have finished alot of layouts in a sort time just pull out the bags and all you have to do is glue no need to think about colors or placement. You will also find that your notes on placement might change a bit and then you can change it. I find most of the time when I gee back to a project that I have worked on I end up having a better outlook on it. Fresher ideas!
