Hello, I'm Ms. Balloon. I run my business here in Las Vegas, NV, where the weather is temperamental. (Unfortunately, soare balloons)!! I want to write this guide for all of the do-it-yourselfers out there!! Did you know? Latex balloons are made from a rubber tree. They scrape the latex off the tree and process it!! Neato HUH? Latex Balloons gee in many shapes and sizes. One thing you will need to know about them is they do not like heat.If you improperly mix helium, latex and heat you have pieces of balloon all over your car/room. A way to avoid that from happening is this: Say you want to do a bouquet for a birthday party but it's really hot outside. (You want to definitely stay away from the pearls and the metallics) They're the first to go!!! What you would do is instead of buying an 11" balloon you would upgrade to the 14" or 17", and only inflate them to about 2" under the actual size, that way it has room to expand. Generally, if you put only helium in a latex balloon you can count on it lasting around 8 hours. If you add a product called "Hi Float", you will have those same balloons for days. As a decorator it is very important that when I drop off a delivery to a convention hall, that their balloons last the duration of their event. When you add the hi float (to latex balloons only) you only give it 1/4 of a pump. You need a pea size drop. Then, you rub the hi float, from the outside, around the inside of the whole balloon. If you use too much your balloons will NOT float!!! If you have to build sculptures or arches in the middle of the summer heat, my suggestion is to use flat (not pearl or metallic balloons). You have a better chance of it lasting longer that way.
Mylar balloons are the foil balloons. They also gee in many shapes and sizes. Unlike latex balloons, mylar balloons hate the cold. If you have a mylar in air conditioning or a cold place, for a period of time, it WILL slowly deflate on you. So what do you do when it's 100 degrees outside and you have a bouquet of 3 mylar balloons and 10 latex. Latex hates heat and mylars love it. Personally what I do is load the mylars first. Then, the latex go on top of them to cover them from the direct air. Latex balloons get very static-e. The way you avoid static is to put them in any kind of plastic bags. I use trash bags. Because of the static, latex balloons get very dirty. If you inflate and bag immediately, that balloon will look like you just blew it up when you pull it out of the bag.
Here's a Fun Fact you might not know. Did you know that when a balloon pops it creates a Sonic Boom? That's why we shutter when we hear that. There is a way to "Scalp", or take down, your balloons without popping them and making that sound. If you grab the neck of the balloon where you tie it and cut a small slit right by your knot, your latex balloon will produce a slow, quiet leak. No ears will beharmed, in the scalping of your balloons.
I hope I have enlightened even one person on this matter. I just wanted to share little facts that may help turn your occasion into a FABULOUS, UNFORGETABLEEVENT!!! Thanks for your time. Have a blessed day. Happy okaying!!!
